Effectmaker Marlous van de Wiel is senior communication advisor at effect group* and helps organizations establish a rock-solid employer brand, create that all-important first impression and achieve successful labour market campaigns. She holds up that mirror like no other and helps you make an overwhelming first impression. In this article, she lists a number of tips for recruiting new employees.
A good and strong first impression
Of course, you can emphasize the beautiful aspects of your organization, the culture, the colleagues and the work, but lying is an absolute no-no! Tell us who you are, what you stand for, and what you have to offer employees. And while a good salary, company phone and the ability to work from home are high on candidates' wishlist, a number of other factors are just as important, if not more important. Below are a few parts of the story that are in your first impression should not be missing:
1. Corporate culture and values:
Everyone wants to work in a place where they feel at home. Do the organization values match mine? Many people are looking for a company culture that is inclusive, supportive, and inspiring. Pro tip? Live up to what you say outside internally for more loyalty, engagement and ambassadorship from your employees.
2. Career opportunities
What are the career development opportunities within your organization? What are the options in terms of training, coaching and what budgets are reserved for this? In short; show how you invest in the development of colleagues.
3. Work-life balance
A good work-life balance is key. Such as flexibility in working hours, the possibilities of working from home, leave arrangements and what else do you do to support a healthy work-life balance?
4. Work environment and team dynamics
What does the workplace look like and how do colleagues work together. Not unimportant when you consider that you spend an average of 8 hours a day in the office. Let employees have a say, show the building and the workplace, indicate how people work together or how cooperation is stimulated.
5. Business Reputation
How you are known in the market, how you deal with current social issues, such as sustainability, inclusiveness and social engagement, have long ceased to be buzzwords, but serious considerations for applicants. Make sure you have a clear policy and tell us about it. Or let customers talk about it in a review.
6. Work content and challenge
Last but certainly not least is the work. What are you actually going to do on a working day? Have colleagues in similar roles talk about their day, the nature of their work, challenge, and what makes it so much fun.

Vacation bonus
Do you have the above topics in focus? Then it is now time for the next step. And to really make applying for jobs a party. Here are a few bonus tips for making that all-important positive first impression:
- Working at the site
Your work at site is the place where candidates search for information. Not only about the vacancy itself but also about the culture, values, opportunities, etc. Where all roads used to lead to Rome, the paths for candidates actually always lead to you working at a site (or page). Should it at least look a little slick? And also driven in from the candidate journey and mobile first - Be consistent
Make sure that the tone of voice, image, atmosphere and corporate identity is conveyed consistently, anytime, anywhere. From FB ad to IAB banner and from flyer to ABRI. Throw everything you do now into a pile. Does it fit together, is it unambiguous and in the style and sender? - Making employees shine
Not we at toilet duck recommend toilet duck. No, it's also a shame. Because your current employees are the most beautiful and best ambassadors. So put them in the limelight. Make videos with them, photograph them, let them write their story, and use this unique content to load your employer brand. Not only does it work, but it also provides a unique and distinctive insight into your organization. - Be where candidates are
You have to be visible to become top of mind at all. So make sure you have a sophisticated campaign strategy that matches the target group. From social media to activation and from open day to articles in relevant media. Be where your target group is!
Use these steps to make that overwhelming first impression. But watch out, before you know it, they'll be lined up at the door. You've been warned.
Put it on!
